The Story Behind the Image

It was 2002, and I was taking a college black & white film photography class where we developed in a darkroom, not Lightroom (hahaha).  The first day of class, the instructor made the comment that we should not submit any of our work if we weren't willing to hang it on our wall at home.  While I thought that would limit me greatly because I am not going to hang a picture of just anyone on my wall, I took it to heart.

Midway through the class, the instructor gave the assignment of "Fall".  Everyone was taking picture of leaves, of course, but when I think of Fall, I think of fog.  I had an image in my mind of someone waiting for the train in the fog with the train coming in the background.  Wouldn't you know it, this particular year, there wasn't much fog. So I waited, and waited for a foggy morning.  I was getting a little nervous because the assignment was almost due and still no fog.  Then it happened.  Thanksgiving morning was foggy!  So, I talked my husband and son into going with me to take this picture.  When I got to the train station, there weren't any people.  What do you do when you need a model?  Use your family, of course!  This would work great because a picture of any of my family I would be willing to hang on my wall.  Now we just needed the train to come in the background.  We waited and waited, then waited some more.  Two hours in the damp and cold I had us waiting for that train.  My husband and son were not too thrilled with this assignment, especially because it was interfering with our family Thanksgiving.  To get them to work with me I did have to bribe them.  I had to make my husband a banana split cake, and I had to clean my son's room for him.

I then learned the train was delayed - due to the fog!  So, it would not be coming until the fog lifted.  I was going to need to improvise.  My cover image is what I ended up with.  The original is hanging on my wall and every time we look at it, we laugh.

I hope you enjoyed this little piece of my photography history.
